Russian wildfires shrink as cold front advances AP

MOSCOW Russian officials say firefighters have had success pushing back wildfires while an advancing cold front is expected to finally put an end to a two-month heat wave.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday that the area covered by wildfires has shrunk by 15 percent in the last 24 hours, from 45,800 hectares 113,000 acres, but about 500 blazes are still burning.

The unprecedented heat wave has sparked thousands of fires, most of them in western Russia. The heat and acrid smog from the fires that blanketed Moscow for a straight week earlier this month have doubled the number of recorded deaths there.

Meteorologists say that a cold front advancing from the northwest will hit the Moscow region Monday, bringing heavy rains and colder temperatures.
